How Opal Began

Hi, I’m Heather! I started Opal because I believe small and medium-sized businesses deserve a fair chance to win public sector work.

Before launching Opal, I spent years working in and around bid teams, helping organisations of all sizes navigate the tendering process. Time and again, I saw how talented, capable SMEs were put off by the sheer complexity of it all, the paperwork, the jargon, the endless compliance requirements. Many felt they couldn’t compete with the big players, even when they offered something better.

I knew it didn’t have to be that way.

That’s what inspired me to create Opal: a consultancy built around making public sector tendering clearer, fairer, and more accessible for smaller businesses.
